Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be an instrument demo this semester?

Yes, there is an instrument demo every semester. See the Schedule & Dates page for this semester's day and time.

You do not need to choose an instrument before the demo, but if you have chosen one, you may bring it with you so we can check it out and show you how to set it up.

If you plan on registering for Intro Band or Intro Strings, attendance at the demo is required!

Should I wait until my audition/testup/placement test/demo to register for my classes?

No. We can't audition or test any student that hasn't registered yet. Please register first, before you complete your audition or placement test. When the registration form asks a question about instrument or level, just make your best guess, and we can easily adjust your registration after the audition or demo.

I'm new to FAYM, but I already know how to play an instrument. Do I have to audition?

Yes. The teacher needs to meet all new band and orchestra students and help you enroll for the class that best fits your level of experience. Don't try to cram or learn anything new for your audition - just show us what you already know, like scales, pieces of music, method books, anything you've played before.

I've already taken theory classes from another source. Do I still have to take the theory placement test?

Yes. All students interested in any music theory class are required to take the placement test. This is because FAYM has seven levels of theory, and we want students to be in the class that best fits their current level of knowledge. Don't try to cram or learn anything new for the theory quiz - we want to see what you already know.

I want to sign up for band or orchestra, but I don't know what to play.

Come to the instrument demo (see Schedule & Dates page for details) to help you decide. Register for either Intro Band or Intro Strings first (make your best guess) in order to reserve a spot in a class, and list the instrument you are most likely to choose. It's easy for us to change your registration after the demo.

Do I have to pay the registration fee when I sign up, even if I don't know which class to take?

Yes! There is a lot of work that goes in to running FAYM. The coordinators spend a LOT of time on updating the website, processing forms, and listening to your auditions and testups. The registration fee is a requirement when you register, even if you change your mind or drop the class. As soon as your registration form is submitted, the registration fee is a required payment.
