Who We Are

FAYM (Fredericksburg Area Young Musicians) is a musical group that provides music classes and ensembles to homeschooled students in the greater Fredericksburg area. FAYM classes run through the Fall and Spring semesters. FAYM does not offer classes during the summer.

FAYM is an organization that is dedicated to providing music classes, ensembles, and opportunities to ALL homeschoolers in the greater Fredericksburg area, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background.

FAYM fills a need of our homeschooling community to provide a musical outlet to ALL homeschooling students and families. Music that is practiced/performed by each class may be secular or sacred, Christian or Jewish, holiday, popular, classical, patriotic or folk songs, Broadway or movie music, but all music is family-friendly.

Age Requirements

Most classes are for students between the ages of 8 and 18. The Elementary Music Class is an "introduction to music" or "general music" type of class for young students aged 6 to 8. The Recorder 1 Class is a pre-band or -orchestra class that introduces the recorder and is also geared towards younger students (ages 7 to 8).

In the Band and Orchestra classes, students are grouped by level of experience, not age. Students can start the beginning classes with absolutely no experience. The intermediate and advanced ensembles are for students with more advanced training and experience. Students have opportunities to step up to the next group level when ready.

Age limits are firm! Please do NOT sign up your child for a class if he is outside of the age range without discussing it with the director first. Some classes have specific reasons for limiting students by age, while other classes are more flexible. Please don't assume that your child can sign up for a class if their birthday falls in the middle of the semester. Email faymdirector@gmail.com (not the teacher) first.

Instrumentation

Instrumentation for any of the band classes includes: flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. (Percussionists will attend a separate percussion class as well as their coordinating band level class.)

Instrumentation for any of the strings classes includes: violin, viola, cello, and bass. Harp students may be admitted on a case-by-case basis. Email FAYMdirector@gmail.com and ask about availability if you are a harp student.

Student Qualifications

We welcome all homeschooled students from Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Caroline, King George, Orange, Culpeper, and other surrounding areas.

FAYM is an organization that is dedicated to providing music classes, ensembles, and opportunities to ALL homeschoolers in the greater Fredericksburg area, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background.

Many of the FAYM teachers are veteran homeschooling parents. If you are new to homeschooling and have general homeschooling questions or need advice, please ask! We would love to help you on this journey.
