What is FAYM?
Fredericksburg Area Young Musicians (FAYM) is a homeschool music program dedicated to enriching the lives of homeschooling students and families throughout the greater Fredericksburg region. We proudly serve families from Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Caroline, King George, Orange, Culpeper, and the surrounding counties. FAYM is committed to welcoming all homeschooling families, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background, and strives to create a supportive environment where every student feels valued and encouraged.
We provide homeschool students ages 6–18 with a welcoming and engaging environment where they can grow as musicians, build meaningful friendships, and discover the joy of making music together. Through high-quality music classes, orchestras, ensembles, and performance opportunities offered during the Fall and Spring semesters, students develop technical proficiency, musical confidence, teamwork, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music. Beyond rehearsals and performances, FAYM fosters a sense of community where students encourage one another, celebrate each other's accomplishments, and form lasting friendships.

Our ensembles perform a diverse repertoire representing a wide range of musical traditions and styles, including classical, folk, patriotic, Broadway, movie, holiday, sacred, and secular selections. Every piece is thoughtfully chosen to be family-friendly, educational, and enjoyable for both our students and audiences. Through these varied musical experiences, students gain exposure to different genres while developing their artistry and performance skills.

Whether a student is picking up an instrument for the first time or continuing years of musical study, FAYM provides opportunities for every young musician to learn, contribute, and thrive. Our goal is to inspire a lifelong love of music while equipping students with the confidence, discipline, and collaborative skills that will benefit them both on and off the stage.

We welcome all homeschooled students, regardless of religion, from Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Caroline, King George, Orange, Culpeper, and other surrounding areas.
Age Requirements
Most classes are for students between the ages of 8 and 18. The Elementary Music Class is an "introduction to music" or "general music" type of class for young students aged 6 to 8. There are sections of Elementary Music for 6 yr olds, 7 yr olds, and a Music Explorations class for 8 yr olds. These classes are a great introduction to the world of music before students are ready for more formal instrumental or choral experiences.
In the Band and Orchestra classes, students are grouped by level of experience, not age. Students can start the beginning classes with absolutely no experience. The intermediate and advanced ensembles are for students with more advanced training and experience. Students have opportunities to step up to the next group level when ready. It is recommended that students be at least 9 years old for Band or Orchestra. 8 yr olds may sign up upon recommendation.
The Chorus classes are grouped by age. Concert choir is an advanced choir that requires an audition for acceptance.
Age limits are firm! Please do NOT sign up your child for a class if they are outside of the age range without discussing it with the director first. Some classes have specific reasons for limiting students by age, while other classes are more flexible. Please don't assume that your child can sign up for a class if their birthday falls in the middle of the semester. Email faymdirector@gmail.com (not the teacher) first. In general, we want students to be the correct age on the first week of class.
See the Class Descriptions page for detailed age requirements for each class.
