Fall Semester Updates

Fall Registration is now over. We will accept late registrations until Aug. 20, but space in any class is not guaranteed.

Fall Semester dates are Aug.31/Sept. 1 to Nov. 16/17.

We are very happy to welcome back students and families whom we haven't seen in two years! We've missed you!

Covid protocols will likely be relaxed in September, but the ultimate decisions will be made in later August according to local health guidance.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility!

We want to offer as many classes as possible, but we are short on available teachers and available class space. In addition, we will be keeping class sizes small.

Registering EARLY helps us to plan for additional classes if necessary, and/or make adjustments to the schedule in order to accommodate as many students as possible.

FAQs

Will there be an instrument demo for the fall semester?

Yes, Aug. 10 at 12:00, right at New Life in Christ Church, in the Sanctuary. You do not need to choose an instrument before the demo, but if you have, you may bring it with you so we can check it out and show you how to set it up.

If you plan on registering for Intro Band, Windstars 1, or Intro Strings, attendance at the demo is required!

Should I wait until my audition/testup/placement test/demo to register for my classes?

NO! We really need your information as soon as possible. In fact, we can't audition or test any student that hasn't registered yet. Please register first, before you complete your audition or placement test. When the registration form asks a question about instrument or level, just make your best guess, and we can easily adjust your registration after the audition or demo.

I'm new to FAYM, but I already know how to play an instrument. Do I have to audition?

Yes! The teacher needs to meet all new band and orchestra students and help you enroll for the class that best fits your level of experience. Don't try to cram or learn anything new for your audition - just show us what you already know, like scales, pieces of music, method books, anything you've played before.

I've already taken theory classes from another source. Do I still have to take the theory placement test?

Yes! All students interested in any music theory class are required to take the placement test. This is because FAYM has seven levels of theory, and we want students to be in the class that best fits their current level of knowledge. Don't try to cram or learn anything new for the theory quiz - we want to see what you already know.

I want to sign up for band or orchestra, but I don't know what to play.

Come to the instrument demo on Wednesday, August 10 at 12:00 to help you decide. Register for a beginning class first (make your best guess), in order to reserve a spot in a class, and list the instrument you are most likely to choose. It's easy for us to change your registration after the demo.

Do I have to pay the registration fee when I sign up, even if I don't know which class to take?

Yes! There is a LOT of work that goes in to running FAYM. The coordinators spend a LOT of time on updating the website, processing forms, and listening to your auditions and testups. The registration fee is a REQUIREMENT when you register, even if you change your mind or drop the class. As soon as your registration form is submitted, the registration fee is a required payment.

Who can I talk to if I have more questions?

Send an email to FAYMdirector@gmail.com. You can also call 540-846-8436.

Where exactly is New Life in Christ Church?

Behind the Spotsylvania Towne Center. Follow the road that runs past the right side of Costco. Just keep going straight back as far as you can, past the houses. Eventually, the road ends and you'll see the church, parking lot, and some baseball fields.
